The success of films like How to Survive a Plague and United in Anger, the recent retrospectives of General Idea (Art Gallery of Ontario), Gran Fury (80WSE Windows Gallery), and Frank Moore (Grey Art Gallery), and exhibitions such as NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star (New Museum), and AIDS in New York: The first Five Years (New York Historical Society) demonstrate a collective hunger for dialogue and action around history, AIDS and art.

NOT OVER: 25 Years of Visual AIDS—a book that captures the first quarter century of work from the organization responsible for Day With(out) Art and the Red Ribbon—addresses this hunger by providing images and information regarding many key AIDS / art / activist exhibitions, projects and milestones. In this way it also gives context to the current moment we are in, where once again there is a growing urgency around HIV/AIDS and the responses it engenders.

Since 1988 Visual AIDS has been working with artists living with HIV, artists’ estates, front line AIDS service organizations, art institutions, the media, and the general public creating space for art and culture to act as a catalyst for deeper understandings, community and change.

Visual AIDS’ first 25 years—the content of the book—spans the devastating days of the late 1980s, thick with loss and action, to the beginning of the 21st century where fatigue, and a dire political climate work to render HIV almost undiscussable again. The book brings us to the current day where we are negotiating new silences, nostalgia, re-emerging voices, and witnessing the growing interest from generations who never knew a world without AIDS and the ongoing crisis.

NOT OVER is an intimate publication that covers art, action and culture while trying to grapple with order, time, and loss.

We invite you to join us on June 30th, the last day of the NOT OVER exhibition at La MaMa for the launch of NOT OVER: 25 Years of Visual AIDS.
