Eddie Valentine

b.1958

"Deconstructive" artist Eddie Valentine, Creative Director at Taste Studios SF has an extraordinary eye, and highly developed skills enhanced by a vivid imagination. "Mister Taste" creates a whimsical mixed media population of free standing and wall sculptures incorporating salvaged "Stuff" including broken toy parts and jewelry, to various scraps of wood, plastic fabric and metals. Once sculpted and assembled he coats his figures with a shiny and glittery veneer adding yet another mesmerizing dimension to an already complex provocative work of art. Every "character' or object he renders has a unique personality and spirit drawing in the viewers to study every last detail. Whether he's working in 2D or 3D formats be assured that Eddie will capture your attention. Eddie who’s exhibited his work on both east and west coasts, is a member of and represented by Visual AIDS NYC, an organization helping artists with life-threatening illnesses to continue their work, like Eddie, a long term HIV survivor of 35 years and counting. He received his formal education at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising/FIDM Los Angeles. Eddie Valentine is also a known Hair and Make-up expert who has worked locally and internationally in both the fashion and beauty industries. Artist Statement: TASTE

How does one “TASTE” art? Do you absorb it through your eyes, ears and minds, then through your stomach or is it a way of life, choices and opinions? Is it a culinary delight just to be looked at as it is displayed along the banqueted white walls of a finely decorated pastry shop or a gallery of gluttony? Like Charlie the Tuna from the golden age of television commercials liked to say; “ Do I have good taste or do I just taste good?”. Eddie Valentine’s assemblage, mixed media and site installations transport your palates to foreign destinations of historic “cultural” significance like race and skin color, current political events, issues dealing with “Queerness” or just right out blatant sexual innuendo. Your first course could come in the form of a South American boat sailing away to freedom away from Colonial collisions. Your second course might transport you in a 3D box of jeweled notions or breaking bread with the Virgin Mary. Hmmm now for the final course, let’s have fun and taste “Star 69”, oh my I can’t finish my “Blow Up Girl” in a metal caged plate, ooh she tastes so good. Waiter, waiter, may I have her to go please? Mr. Valentine’s works are so filling with their shiny veneers and staged displays that they require you to savor his work very, very slowly. You can’t be in a hurry to savor his delectable delights. Now is there room for dessert? Enjoy!
