Mark Gens

b.1961

My art practice begins with the premise that our interpretation of the world around us is dictated by our own necessities, psychology, fears, and desires. I’m interested in the multiplicity of meanings embedded in language, images, objects, and spaces.Working through themes of pleasure and violence, masculinity and desire, memory and fantasy, I seek toconstruct quasi-identities, subtle and irreconcilable discrepancies, erotic provocations, and shifting vantage points.

Most of the source materials that I use to make my work are gathered from the Web. Print media, scanned images, photographs, and film stills are secondary sources. I am constantly searching, appropriating, placing, erasing, capturing, and replicating. Juxtaposed in the circumscribed space of the collage, these source materials are stripped of their origin and pushed beyond their apparent subjective limits.

Our power as makers, viewers, and readers in the age of technological reproduction is made evident by the ways in which we access, re-contextualize, re-propose, re-imagine, and re-format information. It is my actions – appropriating, juxtaposing, making illegible – that imbues the work with agency. And, it’s your actions – interpreting, relating, contextualizing – that writes the narrative. This exposes how signification and authorship are multiple, personal, shared, and malleable.
